There is no rest for the animals in the wild. They have to be alert at every time of the day and night in order to survive. We might think they would be able to relax when they are drinking water or when they are in their home. However, these would be the times when they need to be most on alert sadly. Let’s watch how alert these wildebeest are when they are drinking in the video above.
Wildebeest Herd Sighting in Kruger National Park
The YouTube video shown at the top of this blog post takes us to the Kruger National Park in South Africa. The KPS Safaris & Tours YouTube page filmed and shared this video 10 days ago and it has already received more than 6,000 views. They offer a short description of what happens in this video below.

Wildebeest Herd At the Watering Hole
As the video at the top starts out we see a herd of wildebeests that are at the watering hole. There appear to be approximately 15 that are here. Notice how cautious they are as they are drinking. It almost appears as if they are nervous to drink it because they know the water is poisoned.
Only in reality, they aren’t worried about the water being poisoned. What they are worried about is the poison that lies beneath the waters. According to the Bushguide 101, “Over 90% of crocodile attacks occur either in or near the water.” And these wildebeests are well-versed in these predatorial attacks, especially during the great wildebeest migration when they must cross the waters.
How Many Wildebeests Are In Herd?
Wildebeest can weigh up to 600 pounds.

Wildebeests (Connochaetes taurinus) of the genus Connochaetes are large wild animals that are found in Africa. One of the parks in Africa, the Serengeti National Park states that there can be herds between 500 and thousands of members.
Of course, this is nothing in comparison to when the great wildebeest migration happens annually. And these large herds don’t just consist of wildebeests. There are zebras, antelopes, and approximately 1.5 to two million wildebeests.
As we can see from this video above there are only a handful of wildebeests at this watering hole. They most likely left the herd to wander and find food and the water they desperately needed.
